Chambers FC vs MJ Bushell - The Rematch Report

April 11th, 2018

On a chilly Thursday night in March, the two footballing giants of Essex met in Southend when Chambers FC hosted MJ Bushell. After a tense encounter, Chambers ran out 7-5 winners on home turf a rematch was inevitable, and last week, the Chambers FC minibus made its way to Brentwood for the team’s first away day. MJ Bushell were out for revenge, and the hype was real.

There were changes to the Chambers line up, as Jason returned to the side after missing out through injury last time. With Andy on holiday, and Jim out with the dreaded sniffles, Jodi and Ben were called up to make their first appearances alongside Jason, Darren, Cody, James and Stuart.

Chambers FC went into the game looking to uphold their unbeaten record, and things started well. Within minutes, Jason put Chambers in front after some slick play from out the back. The lead was soon doubled, when Jason once again found the bottom corner. It was a disciplined start with Darren marshalling the back line, flanked by Jodi and Stu who were causing problems down the wings.

A slick move from MJ Bushell split the Chambers defence and allowed them to pull one back in a goal that Pep Guardiola would have been proud of. Chambers regrouped and went on the attack again, and Jodi scored a goal which glistened with class. And there was more to come as Jason set Cody up, who made no mistake in front of goal.

In truth, 4-1 felt generous given the intensity both sides showed in the first half. On the stroke of half time MJ Bushell went route one, and made Chambers pay for some lackluster defending when the ball was rolled through James’ legs to make it 4-2. The goal was definitely enough to change the half time team talks as MJ Bushell went into the break with belief that they could come from behind to win, just as Chambers had done a month before.

After the break, MJ Bushell forced Chambers FC into a collapse. They attacked with pace and flair and caused big problems for the back line who were forced deeper and deeper. In a 10 minute spell, MJ Bushell turned into MJ Barca as they reeled off chance after chance, turning the score from a 4-2 deficit to a 5-4 lead.

A tactical change was needed for Chambers FC, and Ben was brought back on to play Right Wingback. He was able to create some good chances for Jason and Cody, and eventually, Chambers were able to level the game at 5-5.

With minutes to go, MJ Bushell came forward once more but on this occasion, an unsighted James could do nothing to keep them out. There were jubilant scenes for the home fans who had witnessed an outstanding comeback. The Bushell back line were then able to keep Chambers out with some solid defending and a couple of outstanding saves from the goalkeeper, closing out a 6-5 victory.

All in all, it was a deserved victory as Chambers FC couldn’t match the fitness and pace of MJ Bushell. By my count that makes it Chambers FC 1-1 MJ Bushell (12-11 to Chambers on aggregate!) Surely, a decider will take place soon, with Wembley currently tipped as the bookies favourite for the venue to hold the contest. For now, we would like to congratulate MJ Bushell for being the first side to beat Chambers FC since its inception. We look forward to playing you again in the future.
